Do people with extreme political views have more in common than it might seem?

We are pleased to announce a new publication by Dominika Adamczyk, Adam Karakula, Dominika Maison, Zuzanna Molenda, and Marta Marchlewska entitled Radical Ideas for Radical Self-Importance? Exploring the Links Between Narcissism, Extreme Political Views, and Negative Attitudes towards Political Opponents.

In this article, the authors examine the relationships between grandiose narcissism, extreme political views, and attitudes toward individuals holding opposing political beliefs. Drawing on data from three samples collected in Poland, the United Kingdom, and the United States, the study shows that higher levels of grandiose narcissism are associated with a greater tendency to endorse radical political views, both on the left and on the right. The findings also indicate that individuals with higher levels of grandiose narcissism are more likely to hold negative attitudes toward their political opponents.

These results contribute to a better understanding of the psychological underpinnings of political radicalization and the mechanisms that foster political polarization.
