Summary of the Science for Society Project

We invite you to read the report summarizing the results of the research project on different types of national identification and their relationships with various psychosocial variables!

The report “Polishness in the 21st century: types of national identification, their foundations and consequences” is a summary of a series of scientific studies conducted as part of a two-year research project. As a team from the Political Cognition Laboratory at the Institute of Psychology of the Polish Academy of Sciences, we examined how patriotism and Polishness are understood today. Importantly, many of the studies we conducted explore the topic of national identity in Poland during a period of major changes on the Polish political scene, related to the parliamentary elections of 2023.

During the project, we sought answers to various questions concerning the relationship between the way individuals construct their identity based on a social group such as the nation, and their attitudes and beliefs about that and other groups. For example: Do we like our fellow citizens? Who can define themselves as Polish? Do we know our history and believe that we have suffered more than other nations? Do we believe in conspiracy theories? The answers to these questions can be found in our latest report, in which we aimed not only to identify the challenges related to Polishness today, but also to propose solutions. One proposal is to strengthen secure national identification through exposure to an open and inclusive approach to Polishness, which we present in our film “Polishness in Seven Portraits,” available on the YouTube platform.

We invite you to read the report and wish you an enjoyable viewing experience!
